Photo-a-Day - May 2013 - Day 27: Freedom

The Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland is such a beautiful, peaceful site.  It was established in 1863.  One of the areas that most surprised me, however, is this Civil War Park in the foreground.  To me, California seems so removed from that terrible event in our history.  Instead, I found there were both Union and Confederate soldiers buried there. 

Going back through the genealogy of my own family, I found the same to be true.  We, too, had men who fought on both sides. How very sad.
